Land Acknowledgement

AFIWI acknowledges that our work in Toronto takes place on the traditional territory of many Nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples. Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit and is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

We recognize the enduring presence, knowledge, and stewardship of Indigenous Peoples. This acknowledgement calls us to learn, build respectful relationships, and support the continuing work of truth and reconciliation.

African Ancestral and Land Acknowledgement

AFIWI acknowledges that the lands on which we live, work and build community are the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial. We honour their enduring presence, sovereignty and relationship with the land.

We also honour our ancestors of African descent. We remember those who were brought to these lands involuntarily through slavery and the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, those who came seeking freedom and opportunity, and the generations of Black people who built families, communities and institutions while confronting enslavement, segregation, racism and exclusion.

We recognize that the histories of Indigenous and Black peoples in Canada are distinct, while also acknowledging histories of resistance, survival and struggles for freedom and justice.

We honour those who came before us, those who continue the work today, and the generations who will follow.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

- James Baldwin
